Supplementary Health Insurance for Family Members
Undergraduate Students
If you want family coverage through your U of T supplementary health insurance, you must apply as soon as possible following registration (within 30 days). Contact the University of Toronto Students Union (UTSU) at 416-978-4911 or by email at hello@utsu.ca if you are an undergraduate full time student. Contact the Association of Part-Time Undergraduate Students (APUS) at 416-978-3993 or by email at services@apus.ca if you are an undergraduate part-time student. You may be able to arrange for continued coverage during a pregnancy/parental leave.
If you are covered under a similar plan (a parent’s or spouse’s employee benefit plan) then you can request a change of coverage from UTSU Health and Dental Plan based on the opting-out and opting-in period.
Graduate Students
If you want family coverage through your U of T supplementary health insurance, you must apply as soon as possible following registration (within 30 days). Call the Graduate Students Union (GSU) at 416-978-2391 to apply. You may be able to arrange for continued coverage during a pregnancy/parental leave.
If you are covered under a similar plan (a parent’s or spouse’s employee benefit plan) then you can request a change of coverage from GSU Health and Dental Plan based on the opting-out and opting-in period.
Adding a Child to Health Insurance
To receive coverage for a newborn baby or adopted child through your U of T supplementary health insurance, you must apply as soon as possible following the arrival of your child (within 30 days). You may be able to access additional health benefits if you are a member of CUPE 3902 Unit 1 or CUPE 3907.
Health Coverage for Pregnancy and Delivery
In Ontario, you have the choice of using either a midwife or a doctor for the delivery of your baby. The services of a midwife are regulated and are covered by the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) and the Family Care Office can help you identify midwife clinics. If you would like the name of a doctor, call the U of T Health and Wellness at 416-978-8030.
UHIP: If you are an international student covered by the University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP), there are some restrictions on your choice of hospital or health care professional. Midwifery services are also covered under UHIP. For further information, check with the UHIP office at the Centre for International Experience at 416-978-0290.
If you need prenatal vitamins, nutrition guidance (including access to food) and other supports, please contact Toronto Public Health’s Healthy Babies, Healthy Children Program.
Referrals
Your local U of T health and wellness centre can provide support for students who are pregnant by doing an initial assessment and discussing options for follow up. They also provide referrals and information on care by an obstetrician or a midwife.
